Reckon Landing

Reckon Landing 000

"Reckon" is the Softwine LLC project to build a community where men work part of the day and work part of the day.

"Landing" is a process of adapting a population to a locale. Other terms for landing might be "fitting in", "establishing competency", and "liking it."

We're all familiar with someone attempting to join an existing group. A student going to a new school. An employee, whether a worker or administrator, joining a company or business. Even a child being born into a family.

"Landing" can refer to different types of populations. For example, people, animals, and so on.

Take the case of a farmer who purchases a new breed of sheep. These sheep are not native to his locale, in the sense that the other farmers in his region tend to use a different breed.

The farmer can approach the adaptation of his breed using a hands on approach. He can experiment with dietary supplements to ensure the sheep are getting a complete diet. The forage in his field may be lacking this or that mineral or vitamin that certain sheep in the herd require, and that their "native" locale used to provide, but which the farmer's land lacks. So he will provide the sheep with what they need but which his field lacks.

Or the farmer can just put the sheep out in the field for a year or two, and let them fend for themselves. The more hardy, and the more suited to the environment, will survive, while the rest will not. Over time his herd will become landed. In the long run he will have a healthier herd that requires less work to maintain.

The police, the military, exclusive schools, and so on use a screening process to find suitable candidates, and to exclude unsuitable candidates. The screening process may involve a survey, testing, interviews, and an evaluation of a candidate's accomplishments and experience. The screening process may involve rigorous simulated training, such as special forces training, that is designed in a way that only a fraction of those who start will voluntarily decide to finish.

By way of contrast, a commune may just allow anyone to try it out, and whoever sticks it out becomes part of the commune. In essence, if someone can "pass the test" of getting along with everyone, and sharing the common tasks, then they can self-select themselves to join the commune.

The Reckon Landing approach is somewhat of a hybrid approach, combining elements from the commune self-selection process, along with parts borrowed from the way special force teams are formed, and even introducing facets from the hands-off approach of landing a herd.

Here's how it works. Select from the pages below an assignment. If you make it through an assignment, then try another. You will get an idea after a while if you are ready and willing to give the Reckon Landing project a real try.
